-- The result was a disappointment when I first watched this delicious treat. I am not implicating that it was atrocious but mildly predictable. I do not abdicate this gem as Miyazaki's worst work because of the spectacular visuals, imaginative content, and charming characters. When I first watched Sen and Chihiro's Spirited Away, I detested it. But after viewing it several more times, I discovered diminutive elements and wonderful tidbits that compel me to re-watch it over and over again. The process is quite similar to my experience with Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea.

-- I can relate to those who were not appeased when faintly approached by Miyazaki's most recent work. Sen and Chihiro's Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are magnificent masterpieces for its great storyline that features efficient flow. Something that Ponyo does not have (in my opinion). Generally it targets the younger generation but adult audience will appreciate it for the stunning artwork and admirable film package.

Risa: Bringing it to the kindergarten?
Sousuke: Yeah.
Risa: Is it okay with your teacher?
Sousuke: No problem, I'll protect it.
Risa peers at the bucket.
Risa: It's cute. Ship is leaving. Sousuke, eat this.
Risa hands him a sandwich.
Sousuke: Do you eat this?
Shows Ponyo the sandwich and notices his cut is gone.
Sousuke: Oh, the cut is gone! Risa, her name is Ponyo. She looks like Ponyo and she knows magic. After she lick it, the wound disappeared.
Sosuke rips a piece of bread but Ponyo rejects it.
Sousuke: Do you eat ham?
Ponyo jumps for the ham.

Kumiko: What is this? You can't bring this to kindergarten.
Sousuke attempt to hide the bucket in the bushes.
Sousuke: These trees don't belong to kindergarten. It belongs to Sunflower's Home, so it's okay.
Kumiko: Let me see.
She hovers over him.
Kumiko: Oh, a goldfish.
Sousuke: It's not a goldfish, it's Ponyo.
Kumiko: Ponyo? I want to see!
Sousuke: If I let you see, you can't tell anyone else.
Kumiko: Okay, I won't tell.
Sousuke leans backward and proudly show the bucket.
Sousuke: See, isn't it cute?
In Kumiko's frontal perspective, Ponyo gave a cold glance and turned around.
Kumiko: (Irritated) So weird looking and fat! Goldfishes at my home are more cuter.
Ponyo squirt water at her face.

Fujimoto: It's all because of me. Shouldn't have brought you all to this farm. I've told all of you, human's air and water are so filthy. Come eat this, come.
Ponyo is trap in a bubble and her father trying to feed her.
Fujimoto: Do you hear me? "Polumisharudin."
Ponyo turns around. Facing her father.
Ponyo: I want to eat ham.
Rejects her father's food.
Fujimoto: (Surprise) Ham? Where do you learned such horrible thing? Spill it, Polumishharudin.
Ponyo: I'm not Polumisharudin, I am Ponyo.
Fujimoto: Po-po-ponyo?
Ponyo: Ponyo loves Sousuke! Ponyo wants to be human!
Fujimoto: Human? What's so good about that stupid and horrible creature?

Granmamare: Fujimoto.
Fujimoto: So you came?
Granmamare: Beautiful ocean.
Granmamare gracefully floats under Fujimoto's boat.
Granmamare: Full with magic. As if I'm back to 'De Po Ji" ocean.
Fujimoto: Ponyo tasted human blood. The elixir of life that I collected are gone too.
Granmamare: Ponyo? A very nice name.
She swims towards Fujimoto.
Fujimoto: It's my fault. Ponyo misused her magical power. Opened a big hole on earth. She have no idea what she's doing. Somehow she turned into a human and runaway to a boy's house. If this continue, the world will be destroyed.

Sousuke: The road is flooded. If only we have a boat now.
Ponyo: We have one.
She points at Sousuke's small boat toy.
Sousuke: We can't use that.
Ponyo: We can.
Ponyo runs to the table and enlarges the toy by her magic.
Sousuke: (In awe) Wow, that's perfect!
He gleefully checks the boat.
Sousuke: There's even a candle.
Ponyo: Can sit here.
Sousuke: Wow, it's just like a real one.

Granmamare: Sousuke-san, Ponyo have broken the seal in order to become a human. In order to become human, require a man that understand and willing to accept her. You know she's a fish.
Sousuke: Yes.
Granmamare: She turn into a mermaid because she tasted your blood.
Sousuke: Really?
Granmamare: Knowing that she is half fish and half human. Are you okay with that?
Sousuke: Yes. No matter if she's a fish, a mermaid or a human, I still love her.
Ponyo floats around Sousuke's head with joy and then cuddle to Risa.
Granmamare: Ponyo, come here.
Slowly Ponyo swims toward her mother's hand.
Granmamare: Ponyo, looks like Sousuke accepted you. You must abandon your magic power in order to become a human. Can you do that?
Ponyo: Yes!
Granmamare magically conceal Ponyo in a bubble.
